ACC levy increase submission
To whom it may concern.
Rather that take to whole "Its not fair" walk that most motorcyclist will be submitting to you - I actually understand the financial strain that ACC is facing, and I actually think we should all pay more for ACC.
However, I do feel that the proposed scheme in ACC levies does have some pitfalls, which if not addressed are only going to get worse.
It is well known that motorcycles are dangerous, as as most things in life - however ACC levies do not seem to take into account that people stand a high chance of injury using day-to-day items. ACC levies seem to only be concentrated to road users and workers - where in a very matter of fact way everyone knows that chance of injury on the road (and workplace) is very minimal incomparison to the home, public areas and sports grounds.
- Where are the levies on dangerous items such as knives?
- Where are the levies on dangerous tasks such as sports?
- When does the home pay ACC levies?
OSH states that we should treat all Hazards as dangerous, and a hazard is something which COULD cause HARM. However the current ACC levy system seems to think that the only hazards in life are on the road or at work (if thats the case, we should all stay at home then).
My proposal is simple - by all means increase ACC's income to support the idea. But be completely unbiased. An ACC tax of 0.5% on top of GST would easily cover ACC expenses, and would be completely unbiased. Not only that - but because the average household expensive increase would be minimal, it would also be relatively un-opposed.
Now is the time to fix this flawed system, so that all those covered, are paying the costs.

Lexus LFA Supercar
Ok now that you have seen that - and are all amazed in the awesomeness that is the LFA....the bad side, and why its not a supra:
- The supra was just under $120K when it came out, this is $400K
- The supra lacked in hp, it gained in respect with tuners - the only tuners that will touch this will make it a million dollar super car.
- They are only making a limited run, so forget about "buying one when its cheap, and tuning the crap out of it" which was what made the supra a god. It will be easier to buy a 30 year old BMW 850i and tuning it.
Here is hoping the FT-86 picks up this slack.

Myth or lost cause?
This year for the BAD day (see link below) the issue is climate change. I have had some dealings in this area in the last few years - and unfortunately I see big loop-holes in the climate change case. Don't get me wrong - I DO think we are killing the planet (which is like cutting down the branch you stand on).....but I don't think that climate change is being argued correctly.
My arguments are quite simple:
- How can we base data on temperature measurements when we know the planet does crazy temperature cycles over millions of years (according to rock etc)? That is like arguing that all fruit is sour because you ate a lemon.
- How do we have accurate data - when the means to calculate it have only been devised in the last 100 years.
- Global warming is not a cause of climate change, it is an effect. By placing the blame on global warming, we shift the blame from ourselves.
What we do know:
- We have more and more inconsistant weather patterns (Ill nino is a common term - were previous it was used for "freak weather")
- The sky is becomming clouded in some cities (Shanghai, Tokyo, Christchurch, London...) more so than in the past.
- More and more people are dieing to simple things like lack of nutrients, rather than disease.
- We are running out of useful resources.
- Pressure systems are becoming more inconsistent. Previously these were stable for years (aka ice age)
- The sun becomes more penetrating each year.
- The population has increased, demand has increased.....but supply is decreasing (gradually)
So I ask again, with the myth of global warming aside - is climate change an almost lost cause.
Have we been distracted by the semantics of temperature, rather than dealing with the real issue of demand and education? Is it at the point now where we have a lost cause?
